Opportunity
Salesforce provided us with an externship opportunity propose effective methods to enhance Trailhead users knowledge and learning experience on any of the platform modules. We identified Trailhead Live as having untapped potential with a multitude of options to improve upon, so we chose to redesign this space.
Background
With today's technology, learning has never been easier.
• Online webinars have become popular because they're just easier and more convenient than the others.
• They don't take a lot of time out of your day to sit down and watch, you can use them on your own time
• They can help improve memory retention , and/or they can be used in conjunction with any other learning resources.

We found Trailhead Live to have an untapped potential with a plethora of options to improve upon. Through the help of extensive research, we feel confident that we have addressed most of the issues if not all that were mentioned in our user interviews. Both of us had equal participation in all the steps. We collaborated very efficiently to come up with design solutions for the problem space at hand.
Problem
Statement
The sessions on Trailhead Live provide working professionals with the latest technology and news that they may not be aware of yet. However, they have difficulty finding webinar content and viewing them without encountering some obstacles.

Our solution aims to simplify the process of searching webinars, provide information about webinars before they start, and make the experience of viewing videos easier.

Inspiration

Conducted user interview for "Get Smart with Salesforce Einstein" trail since it was a popular trail with a lot of user traffic.

Purpose: To gather information on some of the pain points that a user feels.
Discovery:
  • It became clear that videos are the preferred means of learning for users.
  • Trailhead Live- capacity to train, educate, and develop professionals through webinars, recordings, and various modules.
"A video explaining the unit would be nice along with the usual text"
"I would have preferred watching a video instead of having to read all that text"
"Videos convey information better to me better than paragraphs of text ever will"
Performed Contextual Inquiry on Trailhead Live.
Purpose:
By observing participants in real time, we were able to get insight into how different users interact with the platform.

Conducted a Closed Card sorting UX method to determine which features were the biggest pain points for users. We sent out a survey to participants to arrange the features based on the choice of their priority. We did this to make sure that the development team would be aware that when there search is handed over to them, it is of utmost priority.

The overall approach for the redesign was to make the enhance the experience of the already growing and familiar platform. We chose to focus on the top6 frustrations users have with Trailhead Live which are asfollows:

1. Clutter in the homepage layout
2. Lack of a Search bar
3. No Video category tags and description
4.Personalized Videos
5.Playback controls for the videos
6.Author page

Implementation : Redesign

Redesign 2

Search Box with Drop down menu and filter options for Navigation

Search bar with a Drop down option relevant to Trailheadlive.

Initially this was approached by adding a separate search bar but it confused the user so a dropdown menu was added with the search bar which decreased the user time in finding the content required

Redesign 5

Inclusion of playback controls

Based on the users' preferences and the current features offered by other video content platforms, we added the following:
‍There were initially no basic playback controls of a video player, such as seeking, fast forward, and skipping.

  • Skip
  • Picture in picture
  • Playback speed controls
  • Closed captions
  • Seeking
Usability Testing

Tested our prototype with a participant. We found minute changes to be done with respect to wordings of some of the buttons and the layout of the cards.

Product Strategy

  • Active Engagement: Trending is one new feature that was recommended to measure the regular engagement of the users with any particular content. So the active engagement after this update creates a significant impact on what kind of videos the incoming users prefer to watch which directly measures the success of the content posted.
  • Customer Satisfaction Score (CSAT): Users being aware of Trailhead live our next step would be to gauge how satisfied a customer is with a particular interaction or overall experience by measuring CSAT score.

Personal Takeaways

  • Experience Corporate Ethos: My team's involvement with Salesforce provided us the chance to learn the industry standards and core values that set the tone for the company's overall operation. Salesforce follows its own efficient design system SLDS (Salesforce Lightning Design System) which helped us in providing the standardized, reusable components support collaboration, reinforce branding, and a consistent look.
  • Create engaging presentations: We had to engage the salesforce supervisors and teams through presentations as part of our weekly deliverables. These presentations helped us develop presentation skills in line with industry expectations.
  • Efficiently collaborate with team mate and peers: We were in constant contact with the development team and the management team to understand the feasibility of our solution, which helped us focus on industry requirements and user pain points.

Retrospection

Salesforce has no doubt spent countless hours researching and iterating to create the existing platform. Their access to a huge amount of user data allows them to gain insights into how users behave and what they want to accomplish. Research and data must be a driving force behind the features and how they are laid out. Besides, each company has its own objectives and goals.
In this limited amount of time, I have done relatively little research compared to what the Salesforce team would do. I do not claim every decision I have made to redesign the app is better than what it is now. Trailhead Live can be improved with more research, usability testing, and iterations; design is a continuous process, after al. Here are some things that my team and I would have improved if we looked back.

  • User interviews: Our attempts to speak to Salesforce employees who use Trailhead extensively failed. It was necessary to conduct user interviews with students and other IT professionals who fit the same persona. We created proto-personas instead of actual personas for this reason. We could interview more users who are directly impacted by the platform if we had more time and connections to do so.
  • Stakeholders and Design team interviews: Having the point of view of the design and management team from salesforce when creating this product experience would have been of great value to our research and iterations.
